Alberta Hospital Edmonton

Key Initiatives

Alberta Hospital Edmonton (AHE) is a fully accredited psychiatric hospital operating under Alberta Health Services.

The Mental Health Foundation is proud to support Alberta Hospital Edmonton, enhancing patient care with essential programs and services.

AHE delivers expert care through both inpatient and outpatient programs. The hospital provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and education. Through compassionate care and innovative therapies, AHE helps patients with mental health and substance use challenges recover and transition back into the community.

Patients can access various recreational facilities and participate in wellness education where peer and family involvement is encouraged. Therapy assistant-supported work programs allow patients to learn new skills like woodworking, horticulture, computing, and retail customer service.

The AHE campus houses four patient care buildings and 10 support services buildings on 160 acres of therapeutic grounds. The hospital has expanded its services to offer telepsychiatry to underserved regions throughout Alberta.

AHE fosters acceptance, inclusiveness, compassion and support. Staff work closely with the Indigenous Wellness Core and an elder’s advocate to incorporate spiritual services. Indigenous spaces where cultural practices are honoured include the Sakastew Ceremonial Room and Indigenous ceremonial grounds with a sweat lodge.

AHE is participating in a innovative research collaboration with the University of Alberta on a study using Multi-Modal Motion-Assisted Memory Desensitization and Reconsolidation (3MDR) for the outpatient treatment of trauma. 3MDR is virtual reality supported, exposure-based psychotherapy for treating PTSD and related conditions.
